West Bengal Pharmacy Council is a statutory body constituted by the Government of West Bengal under the provisions of the Pharmacy Act VIII of 1948.

The main objective of the West Bengal Pharmacy Council is to regulate the profession of Pharmacy in the state of West Bengal.

The prime function of the West Bengal State Pharmacy Council is to grant Registration to the eligible pharmacists possessing requisite qualification as per the provisions of section 32(2) of the Pharmacy Act and to enforce the necessary provisions of the Pharmacy Act 1948.

West Bengal Pharmacy Council has shifted from its old office address 8, Lyons Range, 3rd Floor, Kolkata-7000 01 to its new State of the Art office premises at Purta Bhawan, Sec-1, West Division, Room No.5 & 6, Ground Floor, Kolkata-700091, in pursuance of the order No.03-CS/L-0-07/03, dated 02.01.2015 of the Principal Secretary, P.W.D, Govt. of West Bengal on 1st June 2015.

The Council’s entire office is air conditioned and presently applied to P.W.D for further adequate sitting arrangements and space for paper works in view of large gatherings. The present committee after taking charge has initiated for the digitization process of entire data of registered pharmacists which is almost completed for its personal website launch so that applicant can download various procedural forms for all official purposes. Routine procedure of registration will now be much easier, if proper documents are uploaded or submitted at the time of online/ manual registration.

As per the provision of section 26 of the Pharmacy Act, Council has also decided to appoint Pharmacy Inspectors in coming days to implement the provision of section 42 of the Pharmacy Act, i.e. prevention of dispensing of medicines by unregistered persons. The WBPC also achieved a milestone success in the court cases regarding Sec 31(d) of Pharmacy Act, 1948 against those petitioners who sought consideration of their applications for recognisation as a Pharmacist under Section 31(d) at the Hon’ble High Court, Calcutta. The hon’ble court also granted liberty to the Council to initiate appropriate legal proceeding against the petitioners or against such other persons who will be found to have acted in contravention of the provisions of the Act of 1948.

Professional misconduct is one more area where West Bengal Pharmacy Council has been vigilant, following the provision of section 46 of the Pharmacy Act and West Bengal Pharmacy Council rules. Upon the receipt of complaint from a person or an institute or authority, council has followed the specific provisions and took legal actions against the concerned pharmacists.

In this world of fierce competition, taking into consideration the need to update the knowledge and also as per the guidelines of P.C.I., New Delhi, the W.B.P.C has conducted their two days Up-gradation Training Program from 20th January 2017 to till date and almost updated 35,000 Registered Pharmacists’ throughout the State. The Council has framed the syllabus for such courses as PPR-2015 with the help of teachers, professors of Pharmacy Colleges and experts from this field. Regular Up-gradation Training Courses has undergone in the premises of council alongwith various authorised centers throughout West Bengal covering all zones from South to North and East to West.

Under the Chairmanship of Hon’ble President Dr. Nirmal Maji and other Ex-officio of Govt. of West Bengal, executives and in appropriate leadership of Registrar alongwith its all category of it’s staffs the council has already till date has registered ‘A “ Category -25,868, “B” Category-143 , “C” Category- 2,540 & “D” Category-64,785 alongwith the registration of Pharmacists for Union Territory Andaman & Nicobar Islands- “A”-10, “B”-18, “C”-02, “D”-302.
